Leon F. Cohn, MD, Ophthalmology

Dr. Leon F. Cohn is a distinguished Ophthalmologist, specializing in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age-related retinal diseases, and glaucoma. His practice extends beyond these specialties to encompass the breadth of general Ophthalmology. With a robust background in Internal Medicine, particularly the management of diabetes and high blood pressure, Dr. Cohn offers an integrative approach to eye care.


He is fellowship-trained in Retina Ophthalmology, having had the privilege of studying under pioneering figures like Zegarra, Gottman, and Knobloch from the original Retina department of Cleveland Clinic Ohio. Dr. Cohn was amongst the first wave of laser Retinal specialists trained in 1976 following the FDA approval of the Argon laser. He also contributed to the seminal research on the use and calibration of the Argon laser in the treatment of retinal/vitreous diseases.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Cohn earned his Medical Degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine. His postgraduate journey led him to Philadelphia General and Jefferson Medical College Hospital for training in Internal Medicine and later, to the Albert Einstein/Bronx Lebanon Medical Center New York for Ophthalmology. His expertise in Retinal Disease was further honed through a full fellowship at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.


In March 1977, Dr. Cohn established his practice in Plantation, Florida, where he has been serving the community ever since. His extensive experience includes over 8,000 cataract surgeries, countless Argon and Yag Cap laser procedures, and the successful treatment of a wide range of eye-related problems tied to infections, arthritis, and diabetes.


Dr. Cohn is a respected member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He holds active licenses to practice in Florida and Louisiana and is affiliated with Westside Regional Medical Center and Outpatient Surgical Services.


In addition to his unwavering commitment to his profession, Dr. Cohn cherishes his role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He continues to practice full time, bringing his wealth of knowledge and compassionate care to every patient he treats.
